TRADITIONAL LONG BOAT RACE MONTH
Nationwide
As October and November approaches, boat races are held throughout the Kingdom with increasing frequency. Most of these traditional long boat races originated as festivities that accompanied an ancient ritual called the "Tawt Kathin," which itself evolved from the Royal Kathin – a ritual in which the king made an annual visit to the Royal temples to present offerings of monk robes. ILLUMINATED BOAT PROCESSION
Mekong River, Nakhon Phanom
As night falls, majestic ‘fire boats,’ elaborately-adorned with flowers, incense sticks, candles, and lanterns, each bearing an assortment of ritual offerings, are set alight and floated down the Mekong River. This dazzling event marks the end of the Buddhist Lent or ‘Ok Pansa,’ and is accompanied by a colorful street procession and cultural performances.
