2009 KING’S CUP ELEPHANT POLO TOURNAMENT
Anantara Golden Triangle Resort, Chiang Rai

The tournament was introduced to Thailand in 2001 by Anantara Resorts, and is a charitable event that raises money for the country’s National Elephant Institute in Lampang, northern Thailand. In just seven years the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament has gone from a small two-day event with six teams into a week-long extravaganza, featuring 12 teams from all over the world. Muay Thai boxers from around the world return to Ayutthaya to pay respect to their teachers, and to pay homage to the legendary Muay Thai folk hero, Nai Khanom Tom. Highlights include the ritual and opening ceremony, light and sound presentation, traditional Thai folk sports, demonstration, and exhibition.

Poi Sang Long, featuring the ordination of novices, is a religious ceremony of the Thai Yai tribal peoples. A spectacular and colorful procession displaying the offerings for the monks is paraded through the town.

2009 MEKONG RIVER ITU TRIATHLON ASIAN CUP
Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai

In 2009, Chiang Saen, in Thailand's Golden Triangle in the northern province of Chiang Rai, will be hosting the Mekong River ITU Triathlon to promote sports tourism and foster closer relations among the six Greater Mekong Subregion member countries: Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Vietnam, and southern China.

AKA HILL TRIBES MINI LIGHT AND SOUND PRESENTATION
Doi Mae Salong, Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai province hosts its annual light and sound show that presents insights into the culture and daily life of the Aka hill tribes, resident in hilltop villages in Chiang Rai. The shows are scheduled on January 10, February 14, March 14, and April 11 and run from 5:30 – 7:30 PM.
